About this site
This is a personal website belonging to a private individual. It contains only blog posts written by me.
What personal information does my website collect and why?
It is not my intention to collect information about anyone, but the site is built using WordPress, a complex software framework that sets cookies as part of its default behaviour. The site also has the facility for visitors to leave comments and subscribe to receive email alerts. Such functionality won’t work without collecting some information.
Comments
When a visitor leaves a comment the site collects the information they entered and also their IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
The site also checks to see whether the poster of a comment has an account with Gravatar, a service that provides globally-unique ‘avatars’. If you have a Gravatar profile then after approval of your comment your profile picture will appear next to your comment. To do this the site sends Gravatar an anonymised string (also called a hash) created from your email address. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/.
If you leave a comment on the site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
User content
The site does not currently allow visitors to set up their own accounts to post content.

Embedded content from other websites
It is possible, though unlikely, that articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.) from other websites. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other website directly. The behavior of websites that are the source of embedded content is beyond my control. They may collect information about you, save cookies on your computer, embed additional third-party tracking and monitor your interaction with that embedded content including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.
This site does not, and will not, contain social media ‘share’ buttons.
Media
The site does not allow visitors to upload images, videos or audio files.

How long I retain your information
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metainformation are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that register on my website I also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.
What rights you have over your information
If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal information I hold about you, including any information you have provided. You can also request that I erase any personal information I hold about you. This does not include any information I am obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where I send your information
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
